The Eater Meter Main Menu screen has five options.
Welcome

The Meal Enquiry option is used for entering a meal and retrieving a resulting history of similar meals.

The Record option is used to enter blood glucose readings, recent exercise and if relevant the insulin injected with the meal.

The Hypo option is for recording Hypoglycaemic Reactions either as they occur or retrospectively.

The Statistics option facilitates a viewing of the blood glucose data, in monthly charts or lists and exporting the results to email.

The Clean up option allows old data to be purged, to manage the memory usage of the app.

Instructions for Use
  1. Choose your meal and use Eater-Meter to determine a suitable insulin dose.
  2. Take a blood reading, inject your insulin with the meal and record.
  3. Two hours after the meal, test again and enter the details.

The more you put in, the more you get out.

To gain the most from the Eater Meter application, a personal database of meals, insulin doses and their effects should be built up over time. The application 'from the box', contains a very basic inventory of food types and a clean database of dietary records. Over time, as more meals are entered and results are recorded, the system will become enriched with the usual diet and more in-depth history of the users practices. The more data you enter the more relevent the system output becomes.

The system works in real time.
The system interface has been designed to facilitate quick data entry. The system works in real time and uses the time of entry to evaluate the meal type (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) and what data can be entered. It is not possible to retrospectively enter meals or readings into the eater meter. It is a real time application and should be used at mealtimes, either just before or just after. A timers should be set to remind the user to also conduct a 2 hour post meal blood glucose reading. It is this second reading which will evaluate the accuracy of the  insulin dose injected.

The 2 Hour Rule.

The system uses 2 hour rule of assessment to judge the appropriateness of each insulin dose. Two hours after a meal, blood glucose should be equal to or up to 2 mmol/l above a meal time reading. Any higher and the insulin dose should be considered short. Any less than the meal time reading and the insulin dose should be seen as too high.

The Timer
A post meal blood test must be entered between 1.5 and 2.5 hours from the entry of the meal details. If this window of entry is missed, the insulin dose will not be assessed and will be displayed in black in the Enquiry Screen. To ensure that the post meal test is remembered in good time, it is recommended that the iphone timer is used to prompt the post meal test.

Close Eater Meter and tap the  Clock icon. Choose timer from the options at the bottom. Select 2 hours using the clicker wheel and touch start. This application can then be closed by pressing the home (square) button and it will run in the background.
